Get to Know Us

The story of Sunshine Gardens stretches back more than four decades, rooted in hard work, community, and a love for plants. In 1979, founder Chris Carbone began with a simple pushcart in Haymarket Square, Boston, selling fresh produce under the name Sunshine Fruit. From 1979 through 1992, Sunshine Fruit grew into a familiar presence across Boston, with outdoor stands in Downtown Crossing and beyond.

In 1992, Chris opened a permanent Sunshine Fruit location on Water Street in Quincy. Just two years later, the business expanded into flowers and plant material of all kinds. As the company’s success outgrew its space, Chris partnered with Steven Willett "Willie" in 1994 to open Artery Garden Center on Southern Artery in Quincy. For years, Chris focused on Sunshine Fruit while Willie managed Artery Garden Center.

By 1998, Sunshine Fruit was sold so both could dedicate their energy to building Artery Garden Center into one of the largest volume garden centers south of Boston.

In 2012, Chris and Willie opened Sunshine Gardens in Kingston, Massachusetts, bringing a new garden center experience to the South Shore. Willie remained in Quincy operating Artery Garden Center, while Chris operated  Sunshine Gardens and created destination for plants, gardening, and community connection. That same vision carried forward as new faces joined the Sunshine story.

In 2013, a 14-year-old Jonathon Yacovone applied for his first job at Sunshine Gardens. Chris took him under his wing, mentoring him as they grew the business together.

In 2014, Chris and Willie expanded again with the opening of Sunshine Sundaes, a beloved ice cream shop next door.

The next chapter came in 2019, when David Connors joined Sunshine Gardens after answering an ad for an open position. Like Jonathon, David was mentored by Chris and became an essential part of the team and its future.

After more than 45 years of building businesses, growing gardens, and shaping community spaces, Chris and Willie passed the torch in January 2024, selling Sunshine Gardens to Jonathon and David. Together, they now carry forward the Sunshine legacy—honoring the foundation built by Chris and Willie while bringing new ideas and experiences to the next generation of customers.

At Sunshine Gardens, our roots run deep, but our vision keeps growing.
